Support for young Polish talents.

The Jolanta and Aleksander Kwaśniewski's Fund for Supporting Young Talents was set up by the Foundation in a strong belief that too many talents are being lost forever because of inadequate solicitude for their development. Although many institutions in Poland are formally obliged to take care of gifted young people, the support they can provide still does not meet the expectations.
The Fund offers an essential and financial help to such young people, especially those whose families cannot afford to finance the development of a gifted child.
Once in a year, stipends are granted by the Fund to children and adolescentsaged 10to 17, who have displayed exceptional talents for music, fine arts, mathematic or the humanities. The candidates are rated by the Foundation Council which has been called to existence for that particular task by appointing renowned specialists in science, culture, and art.

In the rating, the Council depends on the information conveyed by the completed personal questionnaires the candidates submit by mail. One of the rating criteria concerns the physical and financial potential of the candidates. Hence, the scholarships are often granted to the handicapped children or to those living in small towns and villages, where cultivation of the talents is usually much more difficult than in large communities. The application questionnaires are distributed every year to the school superintendent's offices and from there they may be obtained by the applicants.
The presentation of the stipends by the Presidential Couple takes place during the yearly November celebration of Independence Day.

In 1997, 11 stipends were granted for the overall amount of 30,000 PLN. The following year at a ceremony in the Presidential Palace, stipends totalling over 70,000 PLN were presented to 34 talented young people coming from all over Poland.

The number of applications submitted to the Fund by gifted young people in the fourth edition was as high as 630. In addition to the traditional stipend grants, five children spent one week at the Euronaturama 2002 camp in Owieradów Zdrój; this was a reward for excellent school records. Moreover, the Foundation selected a countryside school in the Mazury region (primary school in Szestno) to pass to its library several hundreds books donated by the Polish Brotherhood of the Gutenberg Chevaliers. An individual scholarship founded by one of our donors (2000 PLN) was received by Wiktoria Wac.

This year the Board of Jolanta and Aleksander Kwaśniewski's "Found for Supporting Young Talents" had received 348 applications. The Board awarded fifty gifted and skilled children with 49 stipends of PLN 3.000 and one violin. This year among the stipendists there were young writers, programmists, musicians, sportsmen, polyglots and globetrotters. Many of them were disabled or fighting serious diseases, some were volunteers nursing sick patients. There were also those who devote their time and energy to help others although they are sick themselves and in need as well. The most of the stipendists dream of further education possibilities, studying at famous universities and a chance to develop their talents.
